Growing plants from bulbs

Different types of plants grow from different types of seeds. Bulbs are unique in the sense that they are larger than regular seeds and they become dormant during the winter. The nutrients stored inside the bulb over the colder months allow the plant to grow and bloom once the weather warms up. If you want to grow bulbs in your very own container garden, you will need to keep the following points in mind.

What are container gardens?

Container gardens are just as the name suggests. A container holds a collection of plants. Now, before you start imagining plants in plastic tubs, just take a moment to imagine how beautiful they can look if you spruce up the containers first. These mini gardens are perfect for those who want to grow plants and flowers but they don’t have a large garden or simply don’t have the time to spend on a big garden.

Choosing the right bulbs

When it comes to bulbs, the quality of the flowers you grow will depend on the types of bulbs you choose. The bulbs should be firm and plump. If they are soft or if you notice mold, they have started to decay. These bulbs will not produce the lush flowers you hope for.

Bulb plant care

Bulbs should not be kept above ground for too long. As soon as you bring them home, you should plant them right away. It’s best to do your planting when the ground is cool and when the evening temperatures range from 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

Choosing the right spot

No matter the type of container you choose, it’s important to make sure that it is placed in the ideal location. The should receive direct sunlight for at least 6 to 8 hours per day. These bulbs will need the warmth of the sun in order to grow and develop. Once they start to grow, the sunlight will also help them produce food and continue to thrive.

Bulb planting advice

The first thing you need to remember is to plant the bulbs deep enough. Dig a hole that is about two or three times deeper than the height of your bulb. You will also need to use the appropriate type of soil. Well-drained soil is best so that your bulb does not become over saturated. Remember that bulbs have a top and bottom so take a moment to check each bulb before planting it. The top should be pointed towards the sky of course. Remember, bulbs are just like other seeds in the sense that they need a fair amount of water. Light to moderate watering every day will help your bulbs grow.

With these tips, you too can enjoy the beauty of your own container garden as well as fresh flowers that you can cut and place in a vase to decorate your home.
